Katy Perry, the 40-year-old US pop star, successfully launched aboard Jeff Bezos's New Shepard NS-31 mission with a six-woman crew. The flight, which took off from West Texas, reached supersonic speeds and separated at 28,000ft, providing the crew a brief experience of zero gravity. Alongside her were notable figures like Gayle King and former Nasa scientist Aisha Bowe. The launch, hailed as a joyous moment for women in space, lasted about 11 minutes, crossing the Karman line before returning safely to Earth, with cheering from the crew and spectators including Perry's daughter.
The two craft then separated at 28,000ft as they reached space and Perry exclaimed "oh my god" as she was shown the moon.
Perry earlier hailed the "incredible and inspiring" women who will be joining her on a flight into space.
The trip, launching at 2.30pm BST, was planned to last around 11 minutes, and pass over the Karman line - an invisible boundary 62 miles above Earth.
Both craft returned to Earth less than 20 minutes later, as mission control announced "booster touchdown" as the ship descended onto the launch pad.
