GTA non-profit introduces women's cohort in construction training program | CBC News
"The Construct program is expected to have around 270 participants total this year, says Emmy Kelly, chief operating officer of Blue Door."
"I really enjoy using the machines and being able to create something with my own hands,"
"Despite industry efforts to hire more women, women made up roughly 5% of construction workers on-site nationally in 2024."
"The program provides support with childcare, transport, and any other needs they might have to engage in the workforce."
The Construct program by Blue Door aims to boost women's participation in skilled trades through a comprehensive eight-week training initiative. With its first all-women cohort graduating recently, it seeks to address the low representation of women in construction, which stands at about 5%. Participants gain hands-on skills and confidence, supported by childcare and transportation assistance. Nearly 270 participants are expected this year, with a new women-only cohort commencing in June, highlighting the program’s ongoing commitment to fostering careers in a predominantly male-dominated field.
