Anna van der Breggen of SD-Worx-Protime has withdrawn from the Itzulia Women race following injuries from a crash in the first stage. Despite finishing the stage, she lost significant time and was examined by team medical staff who advised against her continuation. Van der Breggen was expected to be in a competitive position against Demi Vollering in the general classification, but her withdrawal shifts the race dynamics significantly.
Anna van der Breggen will not start today's second stage of Itzulia Women, as she is too much affected by her heavy fall in the final of the first stage. After the fall, she did manage to reach the finish in Agurain on Friday. This morning it was examined whether she could still continue the race, but in consultation with the team's medical staff it was decided that it would be wiser for the former world champion not to continue the race.
The crash occurred with eight kilometres remaining in the opening stage of the 2025 race, where Van der Breggen managed to finish but lost crucial time in the general classification.
Amidst the disappointment of Van der Breggen's withdrawal, her teammate Mischa Bredewold secured stage victory, showcasing a mixture of fortunes for SD-Worx-Protime.
