'A women's rights revolution': Women attacked during religious divorce event in Borough Park * Brooklyn Paper
Briefly

In Orthodox Judaism, for a couple to divorce, the husband has to obtain and sign a document called a 'get' from a rabbinical court and deliver it to his wife. A woman cannot obtain a get on her own. Some men refuse to sign a get, leaving their wives 'chained' in the marriage, unable to remarry.
Former city council member Amber Adler, who personally experienced being an agunah, intended to educate women about their legal rights and distribute halachic agreements at a pop-up event. The goal was to empower women against becoming 'chained women.'
Efforts to support agunot, women unable to get a rabbinic divorce, exist, with campaigns like supporting Malky Berkowitz, whose husband has allegedly denied her a get for over two years. Activists aim to pressure husbands and provide women with options to safeguard their futures.
