Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand stated, 'You will have to change how you see women to do this job well, and I don't know if you are capable of that,' underscoring concerns over Hegseth's views on women serving in combat roles.
During the hearing, Gillibrand challenged Hegseth's previous statements, saying, 'Please explain these types of statements because they're brutal, and they're mean, and they disrespect men and women who are willing to die for this country.'
Hegseth claimed, 'I would point out I've never disparaged women serving in the military. I respect every single female service member that has put on the uniform past and present.'
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen criticized Hegseth's shifting views, saying, 'On the one hand, you say that women are not competent, they make our military less effective... now that I've been nominated, I've changed my view on women in the military.'
