Wrong anthem played at Republic of Ireland game
"The Republic of Ireland were in Bulgaria for the opening qualifier against Sweden and were standing for the national anthems ahead of the game. As the Irish players turned to face the flag beside the dugouts, God Save the King, the national anthem of the United Kingdom, England and Northern Ireland, was played over the tannoy instead of Amhran na bhFiann."
"There were some shouts from the crowd and the anthem was quickly stopped. After some silence and confusion, the Irish players, coaches and supporters struck up an a cappella rendition of Amhran na bhFiann. Katie Lawlee scored for the Republic of Ireland but two goals from Ella Lundin and a strike from Agnes Ekberg helped Sweden to a 3-1 victory."
The Republic of Ireland Women's Under-19 team travelled to Bulgaria for an opening European qualifier against Sweden. As national anthems began, the tannoy mistakenly played God Save the King instead of Amhran na bhFiann while the Irish players faced the flag beside the dugouts. Some spectators shouted and the incorrect anthem was stopped. After a period of silence and confusion, Irish players, coaches and supporters performed an a cappella rendition of Amhran na bhFiann. Katie Lawlee scored for Ireland, but Sweden won 3-1 with two goals from Ella Lundin and a strike from Agnes Ekberg. Dave Connell's side will face Poland and Bulgaria next.
