"Hopefully it's a little bit of a confidence builder and not, 'Oh my God!'"
"I'm happy for them. We talk a lot about how we're not out here to prove that we're defending national champions or we're preseason number one in the country, and we have to beat everybody by 40. We don't want to get caught in that trap. You tend to finish the year where you're predicted. So I like being in this position."
"It's got to come with great leadership and it's got to come with a little bit of luck and people rising to the occasion."
"Those four times that we didn't win, we didn't get lucky or we didn't stay healthy."
The AP Top 25 preseason women's basketball poll ranks UConn No. 1 with 27 first-place votes from a 31-member national media panel, while South Carolina received the other four first-place votes and was picked second. UCLA and Texas were third and fourth, with LSU fifth. Oklahoma earned its highest preseason ranking since 2008 at sixth. Duke, Tennessee, NC State and Maryland completed the top ten. UConn is preseason No. 1 for the 13th time since 1995, led by Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd under Geno Auriemma. Auriemma emphasized confidence without complacency and cited leadership, luck and health as key factors. The top four teams match last season's final poll order, a first in the poll's 50-year history.
