UCLA gymnastics freshmen learn from Jordan Chiles and from competing
"How I practice is the standard that I want, so now, I just need to implement that into competition."
"They have so much experience just through their time with being elite athletes and things like that. I think it really is going to bode well for them for their longevity and their NCAA career."
"We're only going to be focused on what we're doing, staying in that bubble, staying together, staying as one team."
Nola Matthews experienced jitters during her first collegiate meet but plans to apply her practice standards to competition. UCLA deployed four freshmen—Nola Matthews, Tiana Sumanasekera, Ashlee Sullivan and Jordis Eichman—in a meet against Washington, California and Oregon State. Tiana Sumanasekera placed second on the balance beam and on floor, earning Big Ten freshman of the week honors. The freshmen brought elite-level experience that should support long NCAA careers. The group adjusted after initial nerves, showed improved execution and confidence, and contributed to a win that elevated UCLA to the No. 1 national ranking while emphasizing internal focus and unity.
