This startup offered ride-hailing for women years before Uber and Lyft - and its founder isn't shying away from the competition
Briefly

Uber has begun testing a feature enabling women riders to request women drivers in certain cities, a move anticipated by Jillian Anderson, founder of HERide. Anderson created HERide after hearing numerous stories from female passengers about uncomfortable experiences with male drivers. She developed HERide as an alternative for women riders in Atlanta, operating since 2022. This initiative by Uber reflects a growing trend in the ride-hailing industry towards providing specialized services for specific demographics, including women and LGBTQ+ clients, alongside existing options for teens and seniors.
Many of the women Anderson picked up after dark told her that male drivers often asked to take the ride off-app or tried to get their contact information.
After hearing endless stories like that for a couple years, I was like, this sounds like a feature that Uber and Lyft could just create.
Today, the app operates in Atlanta, including at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, as well as nearby Athens, Georgia.
Offering special rides and services to specific groups of people, from women to older people, shows one potential avenue for growth in the industry.
