Rebecca Young, a 13-year-old schoolgirl from Glasgow, has been named a Girl of the Year by Time magazine for inventing a solar-powered thermal blanket to help rough sleepers. The design stemmed from her observations of homelessness in winter. Her prototype won an engineering award, leading to 30 blankets being manufactured and distributed to local homeless charities. The initiative aims to spotlight young female role models, encouraging girls to see themselves as builders and makers, challenging stereotypes and social norms.
After seeing homeless people struggling in subzero temperatures on the streets of her home city, Glasgow, Rebecca Young, 13, invented a solar-powered thermal blanket.
Rebecca's design won an engineering award in a UK-wide competition. The engineering firm Thales manufactured 30 of the blankets and distributed them to six homeless charities.
Rebecca expressed pride in knowing that her creation is helping others, stating, 'Knowing that something I came up with is helping others makes me feel really proud.'
The initiative builds on Time's existing women of the year list with the intention of recognising young female role models and encouraging girls to see themselves as builders.
