Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner, tragically died from severe burns after an attack by her partner, which resulted in multi-organ failure.
Cheptegei's attack occurred Sunday, when Dickson Ndiema allegedly set her on fire with gasoline. She was hospitalized with burns covering 80% of her body.
Dr. Owen Menach confirmed Cheptegei’s death, stating she had suffered from renal failure as well as inhalation injuries in the ICU prior to her passing.
Police are expected to charge Ndima with murder as he recovers from his own injuries, suffering burns on 30% of his body from the incident.
