Dr. Arlene Bennett, the first Black woman to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania's medical school in 1964, shared her inspiring journey of determination and resilience. Born in Philadelphia, she pursued her dream of becoming a doctor from a young age and overcame various challenges, including gender discrimination in the Air Force and later as a pediatrician and psychiatrist. With a strong educational background and support from her family, Bennett has dedicated her life to serving others and promoting the importance of education and diversity in her field.
"I worked hard, and I was rewarded for that hard work," Bennett said. "I decided I wanted to be a doctor at 9, and that was my dream. I just followed it through."
"The parents drove me into psychiatry," Bennett said. "It was there, but I think my philosophy and attitude made it easier to go through. I was blessed that I grew up in a very diverse community."
"My life is an example of what happens when you have every educational opportunity there is out there," Bennett said.
"Determination, faith and doing the best I can for people and trying to leave the world a little better," Bennett said.
