Pegula upsets Keys: Is this the breakthrough Pegula needs?
""[I'm] happy with the way I was able to serve I think on some really big, key points, execute my strategy," Pegula said after the match."
""I have been seeing, hitting, moving, I feel like very well this whole tournament, and to be able to keep that up against such a great player as Madi and defending champion was going to be a lot tougher of a task today, but I think I was still able to do that really well.""
World No. 6 Jessica Pegula beat defending champion Madison Keys 6-3, 6-4 to reach the Australian Open quarterfinals without dropping a set. Pegula applied constant forward pressure, stepping into Keys' serve to secure an early break and maintained service games with impeccable placement. She disrupted Keys' rhythm with wide serves, angled groundstrokes, looping forehands, slices and flat cross-court strikes to force movement and prevent Keys from planting for aggressive returns. Pegula served well on key points and executed a deliberate strategy. Keys produced big serves and spectacular shots, but Pegula's intelligence and consistency prevailed.
