Iranian Women Don't Need Saving
Briefly

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech invoked the slogan 'Woman, Life, Freedom', originally from the Kurdish women's movement, following Israeli airstrikes on Iran. In the wake of Mahsa Amini's death, Iranian women protested against repression. Women angered by Netanyahu's remarks questioned how freedom could be achieved through violence. The airstrikes not only killed civilians but also hindered the movement, forcing women to focus on survival amidst increased repression. Despite setbacks, new anti-imperialist networks are forming, highlighting the long history of women's struggle within Iran.
As we achieve our objective, we are also clearing the path for you to achieve your freedom... This is your opportunity to stand up and let your voices be heard. Woman, Life, Freedom. Zan, Zindagi, Azadi.
When he used Woman, Life, Freedom in his speech, I wanted to throw up... How are they going to free Iranian women? By bombing and killing them?
Many of those women say it has instead set back the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. Israeli attacks killed hundreds, including women, and left widespread destruction and economic hardship.
Though it gained global attention in 2022, the roots of Woman, Life, Freedom go much further back, reaching into the everyday experiences of Iranian women that gave the movement its urgency.
