Rapist predator Raymond Shorten has shaken the notion of a "safe" way home. When he was jailed this week for 17 years for two separate attacks on young women that he had picked up in his Dublin taxi, Shorten's appalling crimes made a lie of the trust that we put in taxis.

The fear of sexual violence is part of the ordinary atmosphere of a night out for women.
