Kristie Colton, a 28-year-old woman diagnosed with Stargardt disease, plans to hike Mount Kilimanjaro in October with two friends as guides. Despite her degenerative blindness since age 9, she remains active, having learned to snowboard and completed the Boston Marathon. Support from friends at Harvard has been invaluable, as they adapted sports for her needs. Colton’s determination exemplifies resilience, as she strives to overcome her challenges and achieve significant feats in athletics.
"I put a lot of mental energy into trying to hide it, but it did become harder and harder to hide," said Colton, now a 28-year-old Mountain View resident.
"Kristie was the first person that I had met who was blind. She spent like two weeks teaching me how to snowboard, and I became proficient enough to become a guide..."
