In 1961, winemaker Richard Sommer founded HillCrest Vineyard, making Oregon's first confirmed Pinot Noir. Families like Lett, Coury, Erath, and others followed suit in the Willamette Valley.
The 1975 South Block Pinot Noir from The Eyrie Vineyards placed Oregon on the global wine map, rivaling Burgundy wines. This led to the founding of Domaine Drouhin, Oregon by Robert Drouhin.
