Scientists Are Starting to Track Bird Flu in Farm Wastewater
Briefly

With bird flu detected across all 50 states and 70 cases in humans, health officials are exploring wastewater sampling as a tracking method. This technique, already effective for COVID-19 monitoring, is being adapted for H5N1 testing on farms. FFAR has granted funds to Barnwell Bio to develop a reliable system for identifying pathogens in diverse animal species, highlighting the unique challenges posed by varying farm conditions and types of livestock. Tailored strategies for each species are essential as traditional monitoring methods are insufficient for comprehensive health assessments.
Developing a way to detect H5N1 in farm conditions required specific strategies for each species, says Rhys.
Vets or health officials take samples from those booties, places them in test tubes, each designed to identify specific pathogens.
