No mirrors, no machismo: Women lift heavy in Noe Valley
"When working in those types of gyms, I was like, 'Okay, I know women walk in here and they want to do this stuff, but then they get turned off by the vibes.' So that was the spark,"
"We were all just looking at each other, like, 'How is there not a women's weightlifting gym? It feels like something women want,'"
Iron + Mettle is a women-centered strength-training studio in Noe Valley characterized by a black-painted facade with white floral designs. Inside, women calmly and assuredly lift barbells overhead, squat, and deadlift without the bravado common in other gyms. Classes avoid wall-length mirrors and loud playlists, prioritizing small-group instruction, proper form, progressive overload, and confidence alongside muscle. Founder Danielle Repetti created the space after noticing women were turned off by typical gym vibes and after conversations with fellow female coaches. The studio began in 2019 on Valencia Street and later moved to 24th Street near boutiques and other woman-owned businesses. Clients seek guided heavy lifting for healthy aging and skill-building.
