Elaine Welteroth faced challenges finding a supportive doctor during her pregnancy but found comfort at Kindred Space LA, a Black-owned birthing center. Inspired to improve access to similar compassionate care, she launched a fundraiser in 2023 which led to the founding of birthFUND. This initiative aims to raise awareness and funds to support families in accessing midwifery services. Partnering with organizations focused on equity, birthFUND has already aided numerous families, highlighting a growing recognition of midwifery's benefits for maternal and infant health.
Research also suggests that midwifery care can reduce maternal deaths, stillbirths, and neonatal deaths, providing a more holistic approach to parental support.
Welteroth wanted to make that compassionate care more accessible, so she started a fundraiser on her Instagram that exceeded its goal and inspired the launch of birthFUND.
