Breast cancer survival not boosted by double mastectomy, study says
Briefly

Women who had a lumpectomy or mastectomy and kept their other breast did equally well as those with a double mastectomy based on a study of 661,000 women with breast cancer.
The chance of cancer in the other breast over 20 years was around 7%, and findings may not apply to those with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene variants who are at higher cancer risk.
The study's results challenge the belief that a double mastectomy offers better protection from death for many breast cancers, leading to reassurance for women facing treatment decisions.
