Firefox translations are more privacy-aware and happen inside the browser, meaning on your computer rather than some Google server in the cloud.
The more important shift is not part of the program itself at all: it's in how it's packaged, but it marks a quite sigificant change that will affect the majority of Linux users, where Firefox is the default browser in almost every distribution.
