Fitbit, owned by Google, faces a $12.2 million penalty for not alerting consumers about the overheating risk of its Ionic smartwatches, recalled in March 2020. Reports of burning incidents from the lithium-ion batteries began surfacing in 2018 and continued until 2020, with many injuries including severe burns. Despite making a software update to address the issue, Fitbit failed to report the ongoing problems to regulators. Approximately 1.7 million units were sold globally, with significant sales in the US at major retailers.
Customer safety continues to be our top priority, and we're pleased to resolve this matter with the CPSC stemming from the 2022 voluntary recall of Fitbit Ionic.
While health-conscious people wore Fitbit Ionic smartwatches to track their fitness, they had no idea that the watches were putting their safety at risk.
