"We really think a systemic approach in banning and phasing out the most harmful chemicals - which have generational effects - is the way forward. The study authors analyzed 81 different types of headphones, and found that all of them contained at least traces of harmful chemicals including bisphenols, phthalates, and flame retardants."
"These are endocrine-disrupting chemicals linked to reproductive health issues, neurobehavior problems, and other health risks. And while the chemicals were found in low concentrations, their prevalence in the headphones studied shows how widespread and overlooked their use can be."
An EU-funded study analyzed 81 headphone models from major brands including Apple, Beats, Samsung, Bose, JBL, and Sennheiser, finding that all contained traces of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. These substances—bisphenols, phthalates, and flame retardants—are linked to reproductive health issues, neurobehavior problems, and other health risks. European retailers including Bol.com, Coolblue, and Mediamarkt removed certain models from their shelves following the findings. Although chemical concentrations were low, their widespread presence raises concerns about cumulative health effects, particularly for vulnerable populations including children, teens, and pregnant individuals. Researchers advocate for systemic approaches to ban and phase out the most harmful chemicals.
