"While I am disappointed that the House-passed version of the CR did not contain the [RFK] bill, which I've worked on since 2017, I am hopeful that D.C. will eventually get control of the land and transform it from crumbling blight to a productive and bustling complex that will generate significant revenue for the nation's capital," Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) stated.
"The full bridge funding is a significant victory for Maryland, allowing the state to avoid $170 million in budget cuts that may have been necessary without extra federal aid," noted Maryland lawmakers.
The spending bill was one of D.C.'s last chances to gain control of the RFK Stadium site - a longtime economic development goal for the city - but House Republicans excluded the RFK provision allowing D.C. to redevelop the site from the bill.
The House action created mixed emotions in the region, as the potential blow for D.C. economic development collided with a huge sigh of relief for hundreds of thousands of federal employees and cheers from Maryland leaders, who fought for full bridge funding for months.
