White House Correspondents' Association Bows to White House, Cancels Comic at 2025 Dinner
Briefly

The White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) canceled plans for comedian Amber Ruffin to speak at its annual dinner, sparking discussions about the current political climate and journalism. WHCA president Eugene Daniels emphasized the importance of focusing on journalism excellence rather than political division. The cancellation followed backlash from the Trump Administration after Ruffin allegedly labeled them 'murderers' in a podcast. While Ruffin was initially praised for her ability to blend humor with political commentary, this incident prompted the WHCA's decision to forgo a comedic act altogether, aiming to honor journalists instead. Donald Trump is also expected to skip the event.
The WHCA board has unanimously decided we are no longer featuring a comedic performance this year. I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work.
What kind of responsible, sensible journalist would attend something like this? More importantly, what kind of company would sponsor such a hate-filled and violence-inspiring event?
When I began to think about what entertainer would be a perfect fit for the dinner this year, Amber was immediately at the top of my list. I'm thrilled and honored she said yes.
This year's @whca dinner will be hosted by a 2nd rate comedian who is previewing the event by calling this administration 'murderers'.
