NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, along with Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris, is actively seeking support from D.C. Council members for a deal to build a new stadium using about $1 billion in public funds. The intended site is the RFK Stadium area in Southeast D.C. While some council members are cautious about public funding for the project, Chairman Phil Mendelson expressed optimism that a proposal will progress, albeit with expected modifications. This meeting reflects the NFL's commitment to expanding its presence in the District.
"I expect something will go forward," Mendelson said. But, he added, he anticipates that the council will make changes to the deal. Perhaps the central political question facing lawmakers, the mayor, the team, and the NFL is how significant those changes might be.
The Commanders hope to achieve that with about $1 billion in public funds from the city that would go toward building a new stadium at the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium site in Southeast and surrounding development.
