In an interview ahead of Season 3 of 'Dark Winds', showrunner John Wirth talked about his passion for Tony Hillerman's detective novels and the show's adaptation process. His connections with prominent producers like Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin influenced his decision to join the project. Wirth emphasized the importance of cultural sensitivity in portraying Navajo stories, noting that while they draw from the novels, not everything from the original texts can be adapted directly. Collaborations with native writers and consultants form a crucial part of shaping the series' narrative.
One, going way back when I was in my 20s, I always read a lot of detective mystery fiction. I really got involved in the [Tony] Hillerman books.
We're doing a show about Navajo people and we have a lot of native writers and Navajo consultants and so forth.
There are many things in the novels which we don't feel comfortable putting on television. So in that case, we end up having to invent.
So, basically we take everything we can from the novels that works in our stories.
