"The interior presence then got a pretty decent deal from the Carolina Panthers, where he spent two years as the team's starting nose tackle. It was clear from early on that he wasn't suited to the role, but defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero kept him there anyway. The Panthers released Tuttle before the 2025 season."
"That cannot be at the nose if Jones runs a 3-4 base system. Tuttle doesn't have the mass or core strength to clog space and absorb double teams effectively. He could be a rotational 3-4 defensive end, but there is just no telling for sure."
The Washington Commanders are rebuilding their defense after fielding one of the league's worst units last season. General manager Adam Peters has brought back veteran defensive linemen to strengthen depth. Deatrich Wise Jr. was re-signed for his experience and run-stopping ability, despite playing only two games in 2025 due to injury. More notably, the Commanders also re-signed Shy Tuttle to a one-year deal. Tuttle had a modest career with the Saints and Panthers before being released by Carolina and minimally used by Tennessee. His role in Washington's defensive scheme under coordinator Daronte Jones remains unclear, as he lacks the physical attributes for a nose tackle position in a 3-4 base system but could potentially serve as a rotational defensive end.
