"Back in October, Paul Toboni outlined his vision for the Washington Nationals to become a "scouting and player development monster." Washington's new president of baseball operations also hedged it would take time. And though far from a finished product, theNationals will be running Toboni's monster in South Florida this winter - their first version of it anyway - before anyone else arrives for spring training."
""Something we want to establish as just part of what we do is the offseason is just as important the season," said assistant general manager Devin Pearson, who oversees the team's player development operation. " Especially on the (player development) side, there's a lot of training and development that happens in the offseason, so we want to take advantage of that.""
The Nationals will hold a supplemental training camp in West Palm Beach starting Jan. 20 and running through the start of minor league spring training. Approximately 60 minor leaguers are expected to attend, including recent draft picks Miguel Sime Jr., Coy James, Luke Dickerson, and international signing Angel Feliz. A core group of coaches based in West Palm Beach will attend the full camp, while coordinators and affiliate coaches will join for shorter periods. The organization plans to treat offseason training as an essential part of player development and to expand scouting and development resources over time.
