Washington, DC street renamed 'Alma Thomas Way' in honour of renowned abstract painter
Briefly

Alma Thomas Way honors the legacy of the artist who lived in Washington, DC for nearly 70 years. This street renaming honors Thomas's influence as a pioneering Black woman artist. Councilmembers Christina Henderson and Brooke Pinto emphasized the educational aspect of the renaming for future generations. Thomas made significant contributions to the art community, being the first Black woman represented in the White House's collection and establishing herself through her innovative work in the Washington Color School, as well as her role in education and Black art initiatives.
Thomas, the first Black woman to have her work enter the White House's permanent collection, lived and worked at this address for almost 70 years.
This is especially important to me because I live just a block away. It's really going to be a treat to be able to see [the new street signs] and honour Alma Thomas every day as I walk by in this community.
