During a recent visit to Greenland, US Vice President JD Vance accused Denmark of failing to ensure adequate security for the territory, sparking diplomatic tensions. He stated that Denmark has "under invested" in Greenland's people and security, suggesting a stronger alignment with the US would be beneficial. The trip was reduced from three days to one amid backlash from local authorities, highlighting growing discontent in Greenland and Denmark regarding US intentions in the strategically significant region, especially amid interest from Russia and China. President Trump echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for US control in the Arctic.
"You have under invested in the people of Greenland and you have under invested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass. That simply must change," Vance told reporters at a US military base.
"I think that you'd be a lot better ... coming under the United States' security umbrella than you have been under Denmark's security umbrella," the vice president added.
The trip, originally expected to last three days, was scaled back following an uproar in Greenland and Denmark because local authorities had not been consulted by the White House.
We are talking about world peace. We are talking about international security," he said.
