"On behalf of a grateful Congress, this plaque honors the extraordinary individuals who bravely protected and defended this symbol of democracy on January 6, 2021. Their heroism will never be forgotten."
"We owe them eternal gratitude, and this nation is stronger because of them. The officers were overwhelmed by thousands of President Donald Trump's supporters who eventually were pushed out of the building."
A plaque commemorating the Capitol police officers who defended the building during the January 6, 2021 attack has been installed near the West Front of the Capitol, where the most intense fighting occurred. The installation occurred three years after legislation required it, with the Senate voting unanimously to place it after House Speaker Mike Johnson delayed the project. The plaque states that Congress honors the officers who bravely protected the Capitol on that day, emphasizing their heroism will not be forgotten. Senator Thom Tillis led the recent effort to complete the installation, describing the officers' actions as deserving eternal gratitude. More than 140 officers from Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police were injured during the violent siege.
