Wayne Gretzky calls Alex Ovechkin's 900th goal 'spectacular': 'If he keeps going, he could get to 1,000. The sky's the limit.'
"During Ovechkin's 895th goal celebration, Gretzky told the Capitals captain on the ice at UBS Arena, "It's the best thing to ever happen for hockey. Keep going. Get to 900. You get to 900, I might buy your car." Gretzky laughed at the trip down memory lane. "The owner said he couldn't buy him a car, so I was trying to pump him up to get there quickly," Gretzky quipped."
""Well, I like that you didn't say a new car," McHugh countered. "If he keeps going, he could get to 1,000," Gretzky said, turning serious. "I mean, the sky's the limit for him, right? He's one of the greatest players in the game. He's probably the greatest goal scorer ever. And to get 900 goals, that's hard to do.""
Alex Ovechkin became the first player in NHL history to score 900 goals, reaching the milestone against the St. Louis Blues on November 6. Wayne Gretzky reacted on TNT, calling the achievement spectacular and noting that 900 goals is very difficult. Gretzky recalled promising Ovechkin a car after his 895th goal and said the team owner vetoed the gift. Gretzky also suggested Ovechkin could reach 1,000 goals and called him possibly the greatest goal scorer ever. Blues goalie Jordan Binnington briefly stuffed the milestone puck down his pants, later saying he intended to return it and drawing criticism online.
