"They look plenty good to me," Kings goalie Rogie Vachon said of the expansion Capitals, who had lost their first two games on the road by a combined score of 12-3. "They worked like hell. If they work like that, they'll beat some big teams."
Washington finished 8-67-5, which remains the worst season in NHL history.
Goalie Ron Low made 33 saves for Washington, which got its only goal from defenseman Yvon Labre.
There were plenty of good seats available for the first home opener in Capitals history, a 1-1 tie with the Los Angeles Kings before 8,093 at the recently opened Capital Centre.
