Caps GM says Ovechkin future talk will 'have to wait' amid playoff push
"He seems very focused on kind of the short term here, and this team trying to get into the playoffs and having another shot at winning the Stanley Cup,"
"We talked a little bit just about where the team is and what he feels we need and what I feel we need. But it didn't really get too much into his future outside of this year."
"Definitely actively pursuing an addition,"
"With as many teams in the mix right now playoff-wise as there are, I think teams are very much trying to figure ou"
The Washington Capitals are more than halfway through the season and are experiencing a sluggish stretch while still pursuing a postseason berth. Alex Ovechkin, age 40 and in the final year of his contract, has reached 20 goals again, marking 20 consecutive NHL seasons with at least 20 goals. Ovechkin's career total stands at 917 goals after a strong start. The team has not won consecutive games since early December and currently sits on the playoff bubble. No substantive conversations have occurred about Ovechkin's plans beyond 2025-26. The Capitals are actively pursuing roster additions ahead of the March 6 trade deadline.
