Capitals reflect on Alex Ovechkin's 'incredible' longevity ahead of 1500th NHL game: 'The guy's just a machine, and he won't change for anybody'
"Lucky enough to be able to play so many games for one team. It's pretty cool."
"And you can see, it gets harder and harder every year, to get a full year, because the game changed, lots of injuries, and you're going to miss two or three games, and it's going to cost you in the future if you want to make that number."
"He's been himself every day since he came into the league, and whatever he's doing is working."
Alex Ovechkin will play his 1,500th NHL game, becoming the 24th player in league history to reach the milestone. He set the all-time goals record six months earlier and has long sought the games milestone. Only active player Brent Burns has previously reached 1,500 games. Ovechkin played his 1,000th game in April 2018, two months before winning the Stanley Cup. He has missed just 76 games since his debut, 51 due to injury, with his longest absence after fracturing his fibula last fall. Teammates praise his consistency despite a casual off-ice lifestyle.
