Microsoft has formed a strategic multiyear partnership with AMD to enhance its next-generation devices, particularly the upcoming Xbox console. Xbox president Sarah Bond emphasized that this collaboration aims to co-engineer silicon across various devices, facilitating a more immersive gaming experience through advanced graphics and AI. She also announced that the next Xbox will represent a significant technological advancement. Although plans for a proprietary Xbox handheld may be stalled, Microsoft is collaborating with Asus on multiple devices expected to release soon, aimed at broad compatibility across gaming platforms.
Working with AMD, Bond said Microsoft will be able to allow for a "deeper level of visual quality" with "immersive gameplay" and "enhanced" with the power of AI.
In February 2024, Bond said the next Xbox would offer the "largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation."
No longer will games be "locked to a single store" or only supported on a single device, Bond said, adding that the Xbox and Windows teams will work closely to achieve this.
As for Microsoft's handheld ambitions, the company's plans for its own Xbox handheld device are potentially on hold or canceled.
