As Xbox approaches its 25th anniversary, former team member Laura Fryer expresses concerns about Microsoft's future in hardware. In a YouTube discussion, she analyzed Microsoft's recent collaborations, including the Asus ROG Xbox Ally handheld, which lacks exclusive titles. Fryer believes this indicates a broader trend of Microsoft moving away from hardware production. Although she acknowledges the success of remasters like Oblivion, she doubts Microsoft's ability to produce new hits. In contrast, former Xbox executive Mike Ybarra suggests that focusing solely on becoming the largest gaming publisher could be Microsoft's best path forward.
I'm sad because, from my perspective, it looks like Xbox has no desire--or literally can't--ship hardware anymore. This partnership is about a slow exit from the hardware business completely.
While Ybarra believes that Microsoft is pulling back from hardware, he thinks it can become the biggest gaming publisher if it focuses on that goal alone.
