What went wrong with Project Mario 128: Nintendo's 'lost' sequel
Briefly

Super Mario 64, a critically acclaimed game, never saw a direct sequel despite being groundbreaking in the Mario series. A sequel titled Super Mario 64-2 was planned for development under the codename 'Mario 128' in 1997 to utilize the new technology of the failed 64DD console. Nintendo intended to introduce playable characters Luigi and Mario simultaneously, highlighting advancements in gameplay. However, due to the 64DD's lack of commercial success, the project was ultimately abandoned, leaving fans to wonder about this 'lost' sequel to a beloved classic.
We're in the middle of preparing Mario 64-2 for release on the 64DD. I'd like to take advantage of the 64DD's ability to store information. As of now, Luigi's also a full part of the game, but we haven't started thinking about 2-player gameplay with Mario and Luigi yet.
Super Mario 64 is arguably the most ground-breaking Mario game in the franchise, so it's always been surprising that it wasn't directly followed up.
