The Witcher 3's Big Love Triangle Wasn't Always The Plan
"It wasn't [there] from the beginning, but at some point we understood that this lack of kind of conflict, personal conflict-of course, there's Ciri-but there was a lack of something."
"This decision was made pretty late, but it was great. It was a great decision."
The Witcher 3 embeds choices throughout its open world so they rarely feel signposted. Choices carry long-term consequences for the player. A major branching romance was added late in development to provide personal conflict for Geralt alongside Ciri. Geralt begins the game with Yennefer in a Kaer Morhen flashback, while Triss appears in Novigrad and offers a rekindled relationship or friendship depending on prior choices. Players must eventually choose between Yennefer and Triss, both of whom can join Geralt at a cottage ending in different expansions. Yennefer is canonical but absent from the first two games, while Triss appears earlier, often creating stronger player bonds. The series' next installment shifts the protagonist role to Ciri.
