Miyamoto revealed that walking down a Kyoto street and seeing a plastic pipe helped solve a design problem for the game, leading to the creation of the iconic warp pipe.
He associated Mario’s setting with underground environments, inspired by the creatures, like turtles and crabs, that live in such locations, likening it to New York's tunnel system.
In a later interview, Miyamoto noted seeing drainage pipes in a residential area inspired him again, affirming that something would emerge from the pipes, becoming a hallmark of the gameplay.
Regarding the pipes' green color, Miyamoto admitted he couldn't recall why this choice was made, but noted the limitations of video game graphics at that time.
