Dune Awakening's creative director Joel Bylos discussed the constraints imposed by Hollywood during development, which steered the game to an alternate history based on Frank Herbert’s lore. The team closely collaborated with the filmmakers but faced limitations that restricted the depiction of key characters and elements from the Dune universe. These constraints, however, fostered creative solutions, allowing the team to explore a narrative where Paul Atreides is absent. This alternative storyline, featuring a daughter instead of a son, aims to bring a fresh perspective to Dune.
Working with Hollywood constrained our narrative options, so we had to pivot to an alternate history approach. Constraints led to creative freedom to solve problems in new ways.
We weren't allowed to show the Fremen or plot spoiling characters, leading us to explore a story where Paul Atreides never existed—staying true to Frank Herbert's lore.
