"I don't think it's in the same calibre as the other two, you know, Fallout or Skyrim, or Elder Scrolls rather, but I think it's a good game."
"I'm an enormous space fan, I'm an amateur astronomer, I'm up on all that stuff, a lot of the work I did on Starfield was on the astronomical data,"
"... but space is inherently boring. It's literally described as nothingness. So moving throughout that isn't where the excitement is, in my opinion."
Bruce Nesmith, a former Bethesda systems designer who left the company in 2021, praises Starfield while saying it does not reach the calibre of Skyrim or Fallout. He remains proud of his and his colleagues' contributions. Nesmith believes expectations set by Bethesda’s pedigree affected reception and that if another studio had released Starfield it would have been received differently. He highlights procedural generation as a weakness, arguing that many planets feel samey and that space itself is inherently uneventful. He also criticizes limited enemy variety, noting regular humans are the primary serious foes despite the presence of alien creatures. Nesmith previously contributed to Oblivion, Fallout 3, and served as lead designer for Skyrim.
