Skype, Once Touted For Xbox, Gets Snapped Out Of Existence

Microsoft has announced plans to shut down the Skype app for Xbox One and Series X|S, with a transition to Teams. Once a significant feature, Skype was integrated into the Xbox One experience, allowing users to video chat while gaming. Xbox head Phil Spencer acknowledged that the entertainment-focused strategy for Xbox One was flawed, which contributed to the PS4's success in sales. The app had been previously removed from the Xbox Store, and Skype itself was acquired by Microsoft in 2013 for $8.5 billion.
Over a decade ago, Skype was one of the big features that Microsoft boasted about for Xbox One... Today, Microsoft has announced plans to shut down the video-conferencing app entirely in May.
Since then, Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer has admitted the entertainment-focused approach to Xbox One was a mistake and ultimately led to PS4 dominating Xbox One last generation in hardware sales.
Skype worked with voice controls, as Microsoft touted saying things like, "Hey Xbox, Skype Mom!"... the system was initially bundled with Kinect for Xbox One.
Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion in early 2013. Skype was originally released to the public in 2003 and at one point was owned by eBay.
