Senator Mark Warner has accused Valve of permitting hate speech and extremist content on Steam, stating it is an unsafe platform for youth engagement in online gaming.
Warner's letter noted the Anti-Defamation League reported 1.83 million instances of hate or extremist content, including Nazi symbolism and tributes to terrorists.
The senator indicated that Steam must enhance moderation policies and take a stand against hate content, or risk government scrutiny and the spread of harmful ideologies.
Earlier this year, Steam adjusted its game listings to comply with California law, clarifying that purchases are for licenses, not actual ownership.
