Sea of Thieves has maintained a unique place in gaming with its open-world pirate sandbox style, lacking direct competitors even after three years. Game developers have compared upcoming titles like Jump Ship and Wildgate to Sea of Thieves, but they focus on single mechanics rather than the holistic experience Sea of Thieves provides. Creative director Mike Chapman highlights that the game’s success stems from the diverse gameplay it offers, creating a new genre rather than just sticking to traditional pirate themes.
I think if you'd asked me seven years ago, I'd have thought, 'Oh, if we're any kind of successful, there are going to be other games in this space, certainly a pirate game, or very close to it.'
What gives Sea of Thieves this incredible life and allows us to keep evolving it is that it's not any one thing. I think it's almost like the genre that we've created, that we're playing in, and that other people aren't.
