Marc Merrill, in a recent interview, discussed 2XKO, a new fighting game addressing the problem of onboarding new players. The game aims to create a welcoming environment for beginners, a shift from the daunting nature of traditional fighting games. Merrill mentioned enhancements in the game's lobby system and 2v2 format to facilitate community and mentorship between veterans and new players. He also suggested a progressive launch model focused on live service support, indicating a modern approach to evolving game experiences post-launch.
We know a lot of the FGC veterans and incredible pros... they want the next generation to come in [...] and we think we're bringing some solutions to bear that will hopefully enable some of that.
The game's 2v2 format certainly encourages experienced players to play directly with their lesser-skilled friends, rather than the traditional over-the-shoulder coaching that has become the norm.
There's also the question of what exactly is launch... but Merrill believes that a focus on live service support can help Riot's approach.
Merrill is keen to offer a game that's tailored for veterans to mentor new players.
