Rare's Everwild canceled amid layoffs at Xbox
Briefly

Everwild, an open-world game by Rare, has been canceled nearly six years after its reveal and a decade of development. The cancellation coincides with Microsoft announcing significant layoffs, affecting about 9,000 employees as stated by CEO Phil Spencer. Rare first presented Everwild in November 2019 through a trailer that offered little insight into gameplay. Following a reboot in 2021, the game faced ongoing development challenges, including a complete overhaul in design and direction. The future of Xbox requires restructuring to focus on successful strategic growth areas.
Rare first unveiled Everwild in November 2019, but outside of a lush trailer, didn't say much about how the follow-up to Sea of Thieves would play or what its scope was.
VGC reported at the time that Rare had undertaken a complete overhaul of the game's design and direction following the departure of its previous creative director, Simon Woodroffe.
Rare's long-in-development game is no more, according to a report from Video Games Chronicle, citing sources at the studio.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in a note to employees that the Xbox division is being impacted, leading to an end or decrease in certain areas of the business.
