An Australian car import company reportedly posted and then deleted an Instagram image showing a developer scanning Japanese kei cars, prompting claims Forza Horizon 6 may be set in Japan. Fans noted that kei cars are uncommon in America and interpreted the scan as a location hint. Playground Games is based in the United Kingdom, which weakens the assumption that US availability dictates scanning locations. Observers also questioned why a developer would scan a kei car in Australia instead of traveling to Japan. Forza Horizon 5 was set in Mexico and became a top-selling PS5 title after releasing on Sony's platform. The franchise previously used locations including Colorado, France and Italy, Australia, and Great Britain.
The Cult and Classic post was spotted on the subreddit Gaming Leaks and Rumours, with Forza Horizon fans extrapolating that the Japanese kei cars (which aren't found in America) strongly hint at Japan for the game's setting. However, there are a couple of reasons this theory could be misguided. For instance, Forza Horizon developer Playground Games is based in the United Kingdom, so cars not being available in the US has no bearing on scanning for the team.
The most recent entry in the series, Forza Horizon 5, was set in Mexico and is actually the best-selling game on PS5 this year, per gaming analyst Alinea. The former Xbox exclusive arrived on Sony's system in April. In fact, it's just one of the Xbox-owned games selling well on PS5, alongside Doom: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
The Forza Horizon series hasn't had an entry set in Japan so far. The franchise began with a location based on Colorado in the US, followed by France and Italy with Forza Horizon 2. The third entry was based in Australia, while the fourth took the racing game to Playground's home in Great Britain. For more, check out GameSpot's Forza Horizon 5 review. Even though it's four years old, the game still has one of the best open worlds to explore in 2025.
